FAQ

Questions we get asked.

Does it record people talking?
A recorder in the field will sometimes pick up people nearby. We do not identify speakers, we do not separate voices, and we never transcribe. Our siting guidance keeps recorders away from paths and from places where people gather. Ask us for the detail.
Where is the data stored?
In the EU.
How many recorders do I need?
It depends on the site and what you're trying to detect. We'd rather work that out with you than sell you a number.
How is this different from eDNA?
eDNA tells you what was there. Acoustic monitoring tells you what's there now, and keeps telling you. Serious programmes usually use both.
Can it tell me how many birds there are?
No. It tells you a species was present and how often it was heard. Turning that into abundance is a research problem, and anyone claiming otherwise is overselling.
What happens when the model gets it wrong?
Detections carry a confidence score and uncertain ones stay flagged, so your team can check them rather than inheriting a number they cannot question.
